The 10-Day Pikey Peak & Junbesi Trek is one of Nepal's best-kept secrets, offering a breathtaking alternative to the busier, highly commercialized routes of the Solukhumbu region. Located in the lower Everest region, this trek is celebrated for providing some of the most spectacular and panoramic mountain vistas in the entire country—including a legendary perspective that mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary claimed was his absolute favorite view of Mount Everest. The trail winds through serene pine forests, vibrant rhododendron glades, quiet high-altitude pastures, and ancient, untouched Sherpa villages, making it an ideal choice for trekkers seeking a deeper, more peaceful connection with nature and the authentic culture of the Himalayas. Unlike the main Everest Base Camp trail, the Pikey Peak trail remains delightfully off-the-beaten-path. You will walk along pristine ridges, pass through sleepy farming hamlets, and cross sparkling suspension bridges, all while enjoying constant, sweeping views of the world's highest peaks. The absolute highlight of the journey is climbing to the summit of Pikey Peak at 4,065 meters. Rising early to catch the sunrise, you will witness a magical transformation as the first golden rays of the sun illuminate the snow-capped summits of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Annapurna, and Ama Dablam in brilliant hues of gold and amber. Beyond the spectacular mountain panoramas, this trek offers an exceptional immersion into Sherpa culture. Visiting the traditional Sherpa hub of Junbesi provides a rare glimpse into their classic way of life, characterized by genuine hospitality, beautifully crafted stone houses, and deep-rooted Tibetan Buddhist practices. During your stay here, you will hike to the sacred Thupten Choling Monastery, an active nunnery and monastery that serves as a major center for Buddhist study and spiritual contemplation. For travelers who appreciate sustainable tourism, this trek also supports local communities that see fewer tourist dollars than those along the busier trails. Every teahouse you stay in and every meal you eat contributes directly to the livelihoods of these hospitable mountain communities. Sea to Summit Trekking organizes this route with experienced local guides who share intimate knowledge of the geography, culture, and mythology of the region, ensuring an educational, safe, and deeply moving Himalayan experience.

Day 2 Drive from Kathmandu to Dhap — 2,850m / 9,348ft | 7-8 hours drive by Jeep

We start our adventure early with a scenic and thrilling drive from Kathmandu to the trailhead at Dhap. Boarding a private, comfortable four-wheel-drive Jeep, we leave the Kathmandu valley behind and wind along the Sun Koshi River. The route offers fascinating views of lush terraced agricultural hills, rushing rivers, and rustic roadside settlements. As we travel further into the lower Solukhumbu region, the terrain changes, and we begin climbing steadily to the high ridge settlement of Dhap. We arrive in Dhap by late afternoon, where we can relax in a local lodge and enjoy our first evening in the crisp mountain air.

Day 3 Trek from Dhap to Jhapre — 2,820m / 9,249ft | 6 hours trek

Today marks the official start of our trekking journey. We set off on foot from Dhap, walking along a wide, scenic dirt trail that follows a dramatic mountain ridge. As we hike, we are treated to beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and our first glimpses of distant Himalayan peaks. The trail passes through several small villages and agricultural fields, giving us a peaceful introduction to the rural lifestyle of Nepal's middle hills. After about six hours of moderate walking with gradual climbs and descents, we arrive at the scenic settlement of Jhapre. Jhapre features a lovely ancient monastery and provides magnificent sunset views over the mountains.

Day 4 Trek from Jhapre to Pikey Peak Base Camp — 3,640m / 11,939ft | 6-7 hours trek

Leaving Jhapre, our trek heads north on a trail that climbs steadily through a lush, peaceful forest of pine and towering rhododendron trees. Depending on the season, the forest floor may be covered in beautiful wildflowers. Along the way, we pass through seasonal yak pastures and old stone shepherd huts. The path climbs higher, eventually emerging onto open ridges that offer ever-expanding mountain panoramas. After a steady ascent of six to seven hours, we reach the high-altitude Pikey Peak Base Camp. Located just below the main ridge, the base camp is a peaceful spot where we will enjoy a hearty warm dinner and turn in early to prepare for our sunrise climb tomorrow.

Day 5 Climb to Pikey Peak for Sunrise, then trek to Junbesi — 4,065m / 13,333ft Peak, 2,700m / 8,856ft Camp | 6-7 hours

We wake up before dawn to make our final push to the summit of Pikey Peak in time for a breathtaking sunrise. The climb takes about an hour along a grassy ridge, and as we reach the prayer-flag-draped summit of 4,065 meters, a legendary panoramic view unfolds. Sir Edmund Hillary famously declared this the best view of Everest in Nepal. We watch the rising sun light up Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Ama Dablam, and the Langtang range in golden hues. After capturing this spectacular sight, we descend back to base camp for breakfast, then trek downwards through beautiful pine and rhododendron forests, eventually arriving in the grand Sherpa village of Junbesi.

Day 6 Rest Day in Junbesi - Visit Thupten Choling Monastery — 3,031m / 9,941ft | 5-6 hours hike

This is a designated rest and acclimatization day in the charming Sherpa village of Junbesi. To make the most of our time, we will take a beautiful day-hike to the historic Thupten Choling Monastery. The hike climbs gently alongside the Junbesi River, passing through peaceful woodlands and traditional farms. Thupten Choling is a highly respected Tibetan Buddhist nunnery and monastery established in the 1960s by the late Trulshik Rinpoche. Here, we can observe the daily spiritual routines of the resident nuns and monks, listen to their soothing chants, and immerse ourselves in the spiritual ambiance before returning to Junbesi for the night.

Day 7 Trek from Junbesi to Phaplu — 2,413m / 7,914ft | 4-5 hours trek

After a relaxing breakfast in Junbesi, we say goodbye to this beautiful village and head towards Phaplu. The trail descends gently, crossing several suspension bridges over rushing rivers. We pass through charming agricultural communities and fertile fields of barley and potatoes. This segment of the trek is incredibly scenic and culturally rich, letting us interact with local residents going about their daily lives. After a pleasant walk of four to five hours, we arrive in the administrative hub of Phaplu, where we can celebrate our successful trekking circuit with our guide and porters and enjoy a warm, comfortable evening.

Day 8 Drive from Phaplu to Kathmandu — 1,400m / 4,593ft | 8 hours drive by Jeep

We bid farewell to the beautiful Solukhumbu region as we board our private Jeep for the drive back to Kathmandu. The journey takes us back down the winding mountain roads, alongside the roaring rivers, and through the beautiful mid-hill districts of Nepal. While the drive is long, it is highly scenic and provides plenty of opportunities to observe the diverse landscapes and daily activities of rural Nepal. We will make several stops for lunch and tea along the way, arriving back in Kathmandu by late afternoon. After checking into our hotel, you can enjoy a long, hot shower and a relaxing evening.
